Frequently asked questions
Short, honest answers to the questions administrators ask most often.
Does it work with RDP printer redirection?
Yes. You can assign a redirected client printer with a wildcard, for example Brother HL-L2350DW*(redirected* – the session number in the name does not matter. And if you assign a network printer instead, WePrintEasy resets the default printer when the redirected client printer takes over after logon.
Do users have to log off after a change?
No. Changes to assignments and settings are picked up by running sessions automatically, at the latest after one check interval. Only changed AD group memberships need a new logon. Right after the first installation, users log off and on once – just disconnecting is not enough the first time.
Can users still change their default printer?
With “Monitor during session” switched on (default), a changed default printer is reset after about 30 seconds. If users should choose themselves, switch monitoring off – the printer is then only set at logon. Printing to a different printer via the print dialog is always possible.
What happens if a user is in several groups?
A direct user assignment always wins. Otherwise the group assignment with the smallest priority number applies. Nested groups are taken into account. “Check user” in the admin console shows which assignment applies and why.
Does it work in an RDS farm?
Yes. Store config.json on a file share and install WePrintEasy on every session host with the same path – all hosts then use the same assignments. See RDS farm setup.
Does it need RSAT or AD schema changes?
No. WePrintEasy needs neither RSAT nor an AD schema extension nor additional software. The AD search in the admin console uses .NET built into Windows, and the agent takes group memberships from the logon token.
Is it detected by antivirus software?
Some antivirus products (for example Panda) flag PowerShell scripts that are started invisibly with -ExecutionPolicy Bypass. Enable code signing – the scripts then start with AllSigned. This makes false positives rarer but cannot rule them out; if needed, exclude the folders C:\Program Files\WePrintEasy and C:\ProgramData\WePrintEasy. Never exclude powershell.exe itself.
Which Windows Server versions are supported?
Windows Server 2019, 2022 and 2025, each with the Remote Desktop Session Host role. The automated tests run on Windows Server 2025. Windows Server 2016 and older are not supported.
Do I have to install anything on the client PCs?
No. WePrintEasy only runs on the terminal servers. For redirected printers, users just keep “Printers” checked under “Local resources” in the Remote Desktop Connection.
What if the assigned printer does not exist in the session?
Network printers (\\server\share) are connected automatically – the driver must be installed on the terminal server. Redirected printers only exist while the client PC is connected; the agent keeps checking and logs “(not yet) available”. Details in troubleshooting.
Can people without administrator rights maintain assignments?
Yes. With a local configuration, the setup wizard can grant an editor group (for example COMPANY\PrinterAdmins) modify rights. With a central configuration on a share, you grant these rights on the share.
Does WePrintEasy send any data?
No. There is no telemetry; the program does not contact us or third parties on its own. Only if you click “Report a bug on GitHub” in the info dialog does your browser open a pre-filled issue – without computer, user, domain or server names. And if you configure a timestamp server for code signing, the installer contacts it while signing.
What happens to running sessions during an update?
The update keeps all settings and assignments. Agents already running in user sessions continue with the previous version until the next logon.
How do I uninstall it?
Run .\Uninstall-WePrintEasy.ps1 as administrator. The configuration is kept; -RemoveConfig deletes it (only local configurations) and -RemoveClientDefaultPrinterPolicy removes the RDS policy. A self-signed certificate created by WePrintEasy is always removed.
Is the interface available in English?
Yes. Setup wizard, admin console, installer and agent log are available in English and German. The setup wizard asks for the language first (default: English); later you change it under Settings → Language. The setting applies to all servers that use the same configuration.
Does WePrintEasy cost anything?
No, WePrintEasy is free. It is published under the MIT licence.
