System requirements
WePrintEasy only needs what a Windows terminal server in an Active Directory domain already has.
- Windows Server 2019
- Windows Server 2022
- Windows Server 2025
Overview
| Operating system | Windows Server 2025 (automatically tested), Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019 – each with the Remote Desktop Session Host role |
|---|---|
| Runtime | Windows PowerShell 5.1 (included in Windows Server) |
| Environment | Active Directory domain |
| Not required | No extra software, no RSAT, no AD schema extension, no agent on client PCs |
| Permissions | Administrator rights for the installation; users only need read access to the configuration |
| Note | From Windows Server 2022 (build 20348) the agent starts via conhost --headless without any flashing window |
Windows Server 2016 and older are not supported.
Checklist before installing
- Try WePrintEasy on a test server first and create a backup or snapshot before installing or updating.
- The server has the Remote Desktop Session Host role and is a member of the AD domain.
- You are signed in with an account that has administrator rights on the terminal server.
- The print server is reachable from the terminal server, and you know its name.
- The printer drivers are installed on the terminal server – or you let the setup wizard install missing drivers (standard users may not install drivers since the PrintNightmare updates).
- Several session hosts? Create a share for the central configuration (Domain Users: read; admins or a printer admin group: modify).
- Decide whether the installer sets the RDS policy for the client default printer or whether you configure it via Group Policy.
- Using a timestamp server for code signing? The server then needs internet access.
Give every user the right printer – from the next logon.
